A Lifeline for Caregivers: Georgia’s Experience with Care Guide Partners PACE

When Georgia Cross became the primary caregiver for her mother, Martha (pictured), who suffers from dementia, she quickly realized that caregiving was much more than a full-time job. “It was like taking care of a child,” Georgia shared, describing her daily routine of preparing meals, administering medications, and ensuring Martha’s safety. Despite her love and dedication, the challenges grew as Martha’s condition worsened, leaving Georgia overwhelmed and seeking support.
Enter Care Guide Partners PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly). Georgia found PACE after struggling to navigate the complexities of Medicaid and nursing home care. “PACE was the only place willing to give my mom the care and attention she needed,” Georgia explained. Martha became a Care Guide Partners PACE participant in September 2024 and visits the PACE Center in Elizabethtown three days a week. There, she participates in activities she enjoys, such as arts and crafts, and interacting with new friends. “She loves getting her nails done and even enjoys watching birds,” Georgia said with a smile.
For Georgia, the biggest relief has been the peace of mind. “I finally have a break—whether it’s going to the doctor, shopping, or simply resting.” PACE handles Martha’s medical needs, medication, and even supplies her with essentials like nutritional drinks and hygiene products. “I was on the phone constantly with doctors and insurance before this program. Now, I don’t have to worry,” she said.
Georgia emphasizes that the personalized care Martha receives has been transformative. The staff understands her mother’s needs and even helps Georgia better navigate the challenges of dementia care. “They’ve taught me how to redirect instead of argue, which has been a game-changer.”
For Georgia and her family, Care Guide Partners PACE has been a lifeline. “I don’t know what we’d do without them. It’s a special place where they truly care about my mom and me.”
